JLPT vs NAT: Understanding Japanese Language Tests

OM OM Educational Consultancy Team July 29, 2026

Which Japanese proficiency test fits your study or work goals?

If you are planning to study or work in Japan, you will likely need either a JLPT or NAT-TEST certificate, and choosing the right one for your timeline matters.

JLPT (Japanese Language Proficiency Test)

JLPT is internationally recognized and required by most universities and employers, with five levels from N5 (basic) to N1 (advanced/near-native). It is offered only twice a year (July and December) in most countries, so planning around these fixed dates is essential.

NAT-TEST

NAT-TEST is offered more frequently throughout the year (typically 6 times), making it useful if you need a certificate quickly for a visa deadline or admission cycle that does not align with JLPT's fixed schedule. It follows a similar level structure (5Q to 1Q, roughly matching JLPT N5-N1).

Which Test Do Institutions Prefer?

Most Japanese universities, language schools, and larger employers explicitly prefer or require JLPT due to its wider international recognition. NAT-TEST is generally accepted for language school admission and many visa applications, but it is worth confirming directly with your target institution before committing to one test over the other.

Difficulty and Format Differences

Both tests assess vocabulary, grammar, reading, and listening in a similar structure, though question style and pacing differ slightly. Students who have practiced primarily with JLPT-style materials sometimes need a short adjustment period for NAT-TEST's format, and vice versa.

Our Recommendation

If your timeline allows and your target institution accepts it, JLPT is the safer long-term choice for recognition. If you are on a tighter deadline, NAT-TEST is a practical, respected alternative that keeps your application moving.

Our Japanese language classes prepare students for both JLPT and NAT-TEST, and our counselors will help you choose the right one based on your intake timeline and destination requirements.
